Surgery Round One

This week Hubby had the first of his 2 carple tunnel operations.  For a number of years the pain and numbness in his hands has gotten worse and worse.

As an Aborist he spends a lot of time holding on to chainsaws with a tight grip often dangling from up in a tree.  So as you can imagine having no feeling in your hand while you work is more than just annoying it is very dangerous.

He will spend 2 weeks unable to drive and a week unable to use his fingers much at all so needs help with a lots of things including getting dried after a shower and opening things.
We will wait and see how he goes after this surgery before he has the next one done in early 2016.  We have no idea how quickly it will heal and how long it will be until he gets the strength back in his hands.  We have to have faith that he will get the strength back in his hands and can go back to his old job but there is a chance that he will not be able to go back to his old job and will have to look at a new career.
This is not an entirely bad thing as he has wanted a change for a while but only time will tell what happens next.

In the meantime I have him at home with me every day as I work from home, yay (not).  I have taken him down to the local library and got him his own library card.  He is not a reader but they have heaps of DVD's, CD's and great magazines and have can have 20 items out at a time so that is holding the boredom at bay for now.

Any tips for keeping injured husbands amused?

  1. Perhaps he could practice using his left hand...it's tough this close to Christmas. Best wishes that your hubby's hand heals quickly.

  2. Oh not good, hope he heals well and takes notice of restrictions for healing properly, no use going through all that and doing permanent damage to the hand......men are well known in medical circles for not taking things slow and careful with the healing process.

Some study might be a good use of all the spare time, if he has an idea of what he wants to do when he is able to work again.

    1. He is healing well and try his best to take it easy but it is hard for him as he is an outdoors person. Our dog Jessie is getting lots of walks and swims.

  4. All i can say is good luck and get yourself some ear plugs. LOL My hubby is an industrial electrician and in need of the same op on both hands as well. He has a new job so cant take time off to have it done. Friends have had it done and recovered full capacity so fingers crossed (yours not his).

    1. So far we have not killed each other but hey it is early days yet. He has good movement in his fingers we are just going to have to wait and see when the strength returns.

  5. I can completely sympathise with the pain and frustration your poor husband must feel with those sore hands. After my child was born, I developed de Quervains syndrome that affects the tendons operating near the thumbs. (Once this was called new mother's syndrome as it was linked with the repetitve movements of wringing cloth nappies!) I had two wrists encased in inflexible splints and two imobilised thumbs for nearly four months with a small baby. I learnt to do some things differently, asked for help a lot and followed what the hand specialist told me. I avoided the operation my GP mentioned although I don't think I'll ever forget the injection of cortisone into those wrists! With some bowen therapy in later years, my hands now work fine.

    1. Glad to hear all is well now Meg. He can move his fingers without too much pain but can only hold very light objects at this stage. Not too bad for 1 week post op really.

  6. Good luck with the recovery for hubby. Ha! I was going to suggest the library, I'm a huge fan there is many things to do and see there. A bit difficult to find this to do this time of year I guess, but I'm sure he will be fine.
