My Chicken Has A Swollen Wattle

Last Thursday I noticed that one of our hens had a very swollen wattle and it looked like she had a grape hanging off her face.

I suspect she got stung by a bee or a wasp as the other side was not swollen and she was behaving normally.  Swollen wattles could also be a sign of foul cholera but I was pretty sure it was just an insect bite  or sting.

I caught her and put some arnica cream on her wattle to help with the inflamation but all it seemed to do was attract the dirt.

The swelling has mostly gone and she is still a happy little chicken, just not as pretty as usual.

Have any of your chickens ever had swollen wattles?

  1. Looks a bit blood filled or is that the dirt? Arnica is a good choice if that is the case.

    1. That's just the dirt stuck to the Arnica cream, of course she needed to peck in the dirt as soon as I put it on.

  2. Very curious, but you obviously caught it in time and diagnosed and treated it correctly! That's always a relief.

    1. It has completely deflated now Leigh and I expect it was just a bee.

  3. Glad to hear she is all good again, the only chooky problem I remember from farm days was tiny grass ticks around the comb, we would just dab them with neat Eucalyptus oil on a cotton bud, for a day or so and they would die, quick and easy, lucky the girls were used to lots of cuddles and carting about, so they just sat still for the treatment.

  4. Hi, I got some young leghorn hens a month ago. A couple of days ago I noticed one of them had very swollen turning blue at the bottom wattles. Other than that she seems fine, normal activity, walking, eating, no nose or eyes discharge. Any ideas what could be the problem? By the way, we live in the northof spain and the temperature it's been quit hot these past 2 weeks, they are free roaming with shady spots to shelter themselves from but I don't know if that could be the problem. I would appreciate any advice, thank you!
