Apparently We Don't Eat Mung Beans

Or Millet for that matter.
And we don't eat as much tomato relish, strawberry jam or mustard pickle as a family either.
Funny that since there is just the 2 of us.

During my recent pantry clean out I came to the realisation that buying things (Mung Beans) just because they good for you does not make sense if you don't actually like them.
With mung beans it is not that I don't like them but I cannot stand the smell of them when they are soaking and sprouting.

They didn't go to waste though.  The chickens were quite pleased to get mung beans for breakfast.

Mmm we like mung beans

And the plan for the future is to scale back the quantities of jams, pickles and chutneys that I make.  That is "when" I make them in the future.  Based on our stockpile it will be a while.

Is there anything you have brought and never eaten?

  1. I have been looking at my pantry for quite a while now and thinking it needed a good cleanout! The last time I cleaned out I gathered together all the bags of buckwheat flakes, bran etc and made a big batch of granola! I do tend to buy things like that and then never get around to using them. I want to try and simplify our meals and shopping, but then again when I hear of something new I tend to just want to try it :)

  2. Fiona, you could always swap your preserves for things you do eat. I havent preserved anything yet and im looking forward to it. When i did go to a food swap and exchanged vegies for pickled zuchini and relish. Yummmmmmm

  3. Your chickens would have been very happy for those mung beans that's for sure. Your painting work looks great and it was such a beautiful weekend for getting it dry and being in the sun too. Having your list will make things organized and as you say, a big one has been ticked off. Regards Kathy A, Brisbane, Australia

  4. I know I'm certainly guilty of going through stages of buying things because I know they are good for us, but then never get around to using them.
There is still a pack of polenta looking at me in my pantry. Don't know why I can't attempt it, I use couscous a lot and I think it would be similar to cook? cheers Wendy
